Mental Illness Facts And Information
A mental illness is a disruption in the neural circuits of the brain that disrupts a person’s thinking, feeling, mood, ability to relate to others and daily functioning. Just as diabetes is a disorder of the pancreas, mental illnesses are brain conditions that often result in a diminished capacity for coping with the ordinary demands of life.
There are a variety of different mental illnesses and some of the symptoms of the illnesses can co-occur with other conditions, so it can be very hard to find a correct diagnosis even if you’re working with a great treatment team. (Our County-by-County Mental Illness Resource Guides can help you find a team that suits your needs.)
As people become familiar with their illness, they recognize their own unique patterns of behavior. If individuals recognize these signs and seek effective and timely care, they can often prevent relapses. However, because mental illnesses have no cure, treatment must be continuous.
